Facade lighting is more than just a simple task. It is an art that can transform a building from an ordinary and lifeless state into an attractive, lively and different structure. So if you are thinking of lighting the facade of your building, leave it to professional experts to get a perfect and eye-catching result. Light is not just a tool, but a skilled magician who can transform an ordinary building into a masterpiece. If you have ever stared at the facade of a villa tower or commercial building that shines at night and asked yourself how it became so attractive? The answer lies in the art of facade lighting.
Lighting is not just for beauty. It also increases security and identity of the building and even reduces energy consumption. Yes, you read that right. Principled lighting can also help save money. In this article, we are going to examine everything from design to implementation and price of facade lighting. So if you plan to transform the facade of your building with lighting, stay with us until the end of this article.
Building Facade Lighting (When a Building Comes Alive)
Building facade lighting is one of the most important parts of architectural design that can multiply the identity and attractiveness of a building. But this is not so simple. If done without a plan and expertise, it may not only not be beautiful, but also give the building an inappropriate appearance. But how do we have a principled lighting? This depends on several factors:
1. Architectural style of the building
Each building has its own identity and personality. You cannot light a classic building with tall columns and many details like a modern tower.
Example:
Classic buildings: warm and soft lights such as gold and white wall washers
Modern buildings: linear, minimal lighting and the use of neutral colors
Commercial and office buildings: a combination of dynamic lights, RGB and special lighting effects
2. Type of building use
Hotels and accommodation centers should have a warm and inviting feeling.
Residential buildings should convey a sense of peace and security. Shopping and commercial centers should be attractive, energetic, and impressive to attract customers.
3. Choosing the right equipment
Using special facade lights such as wall washers, projectors, linear lights and fiber optics can illuminate your facade in a professional way. But the important thing is to use waterproof and dust-resistant equipment and weather conditions.
4. Color combination and light intensity
Playing with colors is very important in lighting. Using a fixed color is not always the best option. Sometimes combining several soft colors or even using RGB lights can make your facade more impressive.
An attractive example of creative lighting:
You must have seen towers whose lights change and different shapes and patterns are created on the facade. This technique is done using dynamic lighting and remote control, which allows buildings to change their lighting on special occasions.
Price of building facade lighting (cost or investment)
One of the first questions that comes to mind for everyone is how much does facade lighting cost? Well, the answer to this question depends on several important factors:
1. Area and height of the building
The larger and higher the building, the more equipment it requires and the higher the cost.
2. Type of equipment used
Energy-saving LED lights: cheaper and more durable
Professional wall washers: more expensive but higher quality
RGB and dynamic lighting: more expensive but creates a modern and special effect
3. Method of implementation and wiring
Sometimes, the implementation of lighting in a building becomes more complicated due to the specific conditions of the facade and requires more equipment and specialized personnel, which affects the price.
An important point about costs:
The better equipment you choose, the lower your maintenance and energy consumption costs in the long run. So instead of just thinking about the initial price, consider the quality and durability of the equipment.
If you want your building to shine at night and attract everyone’s attention, facade lighting is a great choice. But remember that this requires expertise, experience, and the right equipment.
Facade lighting implementation
Facade lighting implementation is the connection point between creative design and technical realization of the project. At this stage, architectural and lighting ideas are implemented in a precise and controlled manner. Any mistake or simplification in this section can directly affect the final quality, durability of the equipment and even the return on investment. Therefore, correct and engineered implementation is the first condition for the success of facade lighting projects.
Developing a lighting strategy with architectural and user analysis
The first step in implementing facade lighting is to develop a lighting strategy that is appropriate to the architectural form and use of the building. Residential, office or commercial buildings each have a different lighting goal. Instilling a sense of security, creating visual appeal or night branding. At this stage, with the help of specialized software such as Dialux or Relux, light intensity (lux), angle of radiation, contrasts and light shadow areas are accurately simulated and determined.
Accurate selection of equipment appropriate to the purpose, climatic conditions and lifespan
The selection of equipment in the implementation of facade lighting should not be based solely on appearance or price. LED chip type, CRI color rendering index above 80, CCT color temperature between 2700 and 5000 Kelvin, luminous efficacy (Lm/W), IP66 or higher protection level, and anti-corrosion standards in humid cities are all important technical criteria. Using poor quality equipment can lead to light loss, color change, or burnout within a few months, negating the initial investment.
Engineered installation with emphasis on glare control and uniform light distribution
Proper execution of facade lighting requires careful attention to installation details. From the type of fasteners and cable connections to the way the lights dissipate heat and the precise installation angle of each light source. Glare control (UGR<19) is very important in urban projects. Also, uniform light distribution (Uniformity Ratio) must be observed in the final implementation to prevent the facade from staining. The use of DALI or DMX drivers allows for precise controllability and scenario writing.
Combining Physical Implementation with Smart Lighting Systems
Modern projects do not limit the implementation of facade lighting to simply lighting the building. Connecting equipment to smart systems allows the client to coordinate the lighting of the building with occasions, seasons or brand promotions. This level of control not only increases the aesthetic value of the project but also directly affects the branding, attracting the attention of the audience and even increasing the value of the property.
Introducing 3 Facade Lighting Projects by Shamim Andishe
Lighting of Karun 3 Dam (Combination of Grandeur and Brightness)
Karun 3 Dam is one of the largest dams in the world, a magnificent and proud structure. In order to make this grandeur visible at night, it was decided to light it with the proposal of Shamim Andishe Company. The goal was to make the grandeur of the dam visible even in the dark. The main challenge was the height and enormous dimensions of the dam, which made it difficult to install projectors. However, our team was able to design a stable and powerful system by conducting numerous tests and using professional equipment.
The result was a stunning lighting that not only doubled the beauty of the dam, but also placed its images among the most spectacular dams in the world. A combination of art and engineering that created a lasting impression.
Temporary Lighting of Milad Tower (Glowing in the Middle of Construction)
It was February 2004 and Milad Tower was still under construction. But the municipality decided to highlight this tall structure with special lighting for the celebrations of the victory of the revolution. The main challenge was safety, and due to the construction conditions, it was not possible to implement any type of lighting. This is where Shamim Andisheh’s team got to work. Using sky projectors and color changer systems that could shine light up to a height of 250 meters, the facade of Milad Tower was bathed in light for several nights.
This project was the first temporary lighting of Milad Tower before it became a bright symbol of Tehran. An experience that showed that even in limited conditions, creativity and technology can go hand in hand and create a memorable image.
Lighting of Azadi Tower (A new look for the symbol of Tehran)
With its unique architecture and important history, Azadi Tower has always been one of the most iconic buildings in Tehran. These features made the municipality think about lighting this valuable building so that it would shine beautifully at night.
At that time, few companies were able to provide powerful projectors to illuminate such a tall building, and we were one of those few companies. The municipality asked us to implement a design that would distinguish the Azadi Tower from other buildings in the city. But we had a different proposal. Instead of permanent lighting, we would use light to create special effects during ceremonies and special events. This would both add beauty to the tower and be more logical in terms of energy and maintenance of the building.
For this, we used sky projectors and professional City Color color changers made by the Italian company Studio Deva. The result was something that impressed everyone: light that not only made the tower more beautiful, but also gave a special effect to the nights of Tehran by reflecting in the sky. The implementation of this project was a combination of art, technology, and respect for history, which made the Azadi Tower continue to shine even in the dark.
